OSC Liturgical Manuscripts

Note from the Compiler: Research on the liturgical manuscripts Ordinis Sanctae Crucis has never been carefully organized. In the course of my research, I discovered that few bibliographies exist which covered these particular manuscripts. The bibliographic materials which do exist cover only very select manuscripts, particular libraries, or designated regions. On this Web page, I have compiled an up-to-date list of OSC liturgical manuscripts. Listed here are only those manuscripts which contain material original to the OSC (in whole or part). I have not listed manuscripts which were only used by OSC or are catalogued in libraries under OSC if they do not contain some text specifically from their liturgical Ordo.

If you have further questions or information concerning OSC liturgical manuscripts, please contact me by e-mail:

As mentioned above, I only included those manuscripts which contain at least some text particular to the Crosiers. In other sources, two breviary manuscripts have often been listed as Crosier: a breviary at the city archives of Düren (Germany) and a breviary at the University of Cape Town (South Africa). Despite their classification as such, they are not Crosier manuscripts (though one of them was used at a Crosier monastery).

Düren, Stadarchiv.

bulletBreviarium. Unnumbered. This manuscript contains 465 parchment folios which are bound in an oak cover. Various inscriptions link the manuscript to the Crosiers of St. Mathias Priory at Schwarzenbroich. Yet the main text, including the calendar, are not Crosier. The text is close enough to the Crosier liturgical practice that it could have been used with some modifications. So, the calendar, in fact the whole breviary, is filled with numerous corrections and additions to bring an obviously non-Crosier manuscript in line with the practice at Schwarzenbroich. Though the manuscript was used by Crosiers and has been identified as Crosier, the original text and calendar are not Crosier in origin.

Cape Town, J. W. Jagger Library, University of Cape Town

bulletBreviarium. Unnumbered manuscript. Dr. Henri van Rooijen refers to this manuscript in an article on the liturgy of the Crosiers. The library identifies this manuscript as a fifteenth century Dutch breviary. The library has not identified it as being from the Crosiers and this is verified by examining the calendar. Though it contains the feasts of St. Augustine, it also contains numerous Flemish saints that have never found their way into the Crosier calendar. Further it is missing a number of important feasts common to the Crosiers (e.g. Helena, Odilia and Corone domini).
